Navigating New Territory: Filming and Photographing in Unfamiliar Venues

by Nick Rosendale

Introduction

Stepping into a new location or venue for filming or photographing can be an exhilarating yet daunting experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a major sporting event.  And wow, it was a vast expanse of a stadium, an iconic venue bustling with energy and stories waiting to be captured. I know from many years of doing this the importance of preparation, courtesy, and camaraderie in navigating unfamiliar territory.

Allowing ample time to collect accreditation is paramount. With hundreds of individuals working to orchestrate events on any given day, obtaining proper clearance is not only a professional courtesy but also a logistical necessity. Arriving early ensured that I had sufficient time to complete the necessary paperwork and familiarise myself with the venue’s guidelines, ensuring I could get in and park with all my kit.

As I did my third lap of the corridors of the stadium,

I encountered fellow media professionals who had undoubtedly traversed these halls countless times before. Being friendly and with a smile, I took the initiative to introduce myself, forging connections that would prove invaluable as the day unfolded. Whether sharing insights on ideal vantage points or offering friendly advice on navigating the venue’s quickest routes, these interactions underscored the importance of collaboration within the media community.

Throughout my journey, one principle remained steadfast:

Politeness and communication are the cornerstones of success in any new environment. Whether seeking clarification on permitted filming locations or requesting assistance from venue staff, approaching each interaction with respect and humility always goes a long way. Yes, you may be told no, or told you can’t stand there. But always be polite as we all have jobs to do.
